Welcome to the Stroke
Action London Web site. Stroke is a brain attack and has a major impact
on people's lives. Recent estimates from the World Health Organisation
(WHO) state that Stroke is the leading cause of death worldwide, and
the sixth leading global cause of disease burden, a ranking that is
anticipated to increase to number four by the year 2020.
Evidence has shown that one third of individuals affected by strokes
will recover, another one third will retain significant physical
disability and a third will die as a result of having had a stroke.
In addition, 100 to 300 people out of every one hundred thousand
of the world population are likely to have a first stroke each year.
According to a consensus statement on stroke, "Every five
minutes someone in the UK has a stroke." The Department of
Health in its National Service Framework for Older people published
in 2001 state that"the NHS will take action to prevent strokes
by working in partnership with other agencies". The Stroke
Action London aims to contribute to reducing stroke incidences in
the population through empowering individuals to take control of
their own health.
